A dental crown is a tooth-like covering placed over a carefully prepared existing tooth or an implant. This crown is used to restore and strengthen your natural tooth. A crown is placed on an individual tooth much like a thimble over your finger.
When are dental crowns recommended:
- Cover a tooth that had a root canal
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a cracked tooth
- Cover poorly shaped tooth
- Cover a discolored tooth
- Cover a tooth that needs a large filling but there isn’t enough tooth left
- Attach to a bridge
- Protect a tooth from fracturing
At Day Spring Dental, we offer several types of crowns. Usually on back teeth we recommend porcelain fused to metal crowns. In some instances we may recommend a full gold crown. If a front tooth needs a crown, we will use all porcelain as it looks better. Please always ask us if you have questions on what type of crown would be best for your situation.
What is a dental bridge and why are crowns involved?
A bridge is a custom device used to replace a missing tooth. The bridge is attached to teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced with bridge work, the teeth on either side of the missing one must be prepared as crowns to serve as anchors to hold the bridge in place. Bridges are permanently attached and are generally made of porcelain. A bridge is an excellent option over a removable appliance. Another option would be a dental implant.
Why do I need a dental bridge?
How long do dental crowns and bridges last?
With good oral hygiene, crowns and bridges can last a lifetime. Occasionally they can come loose or fall out. If that happens, please call us so that we can remedy the problem. Sometimes a bridge will lose support if the anchoring teeth become weak or damaged.
By practicing good oral care, brushing, flossing daily and visiting your dentist and hygienist on a regular basis, you will keep your teeth and gums healthy.
